Hatchie – Sure

Hatchie – Sure

Hatchie‘s single “Sure” was already released in November last year, but I came across it recently and wasn’t able to resist its catchy flashback-to-the-90’s vibes. The start of the song made me anticipate Chapterhouse‘s “Pearl”, followed by the warm jangly guitar chords of the Sundays, and the innocent, poignant vocals of the early Cranberries (whose singer Dolores O’Riordan sadly passed away yesterday on Blue Monday Jan 15th). Sure” is a near-perfect pop-composition: its components hook and flow into one and other seamlessly, and the cleverly looping lyrics give the chorus a chant-like quality that makes you wanna hear, and sing to, the song over and over again. This is hit material!

I expect to hear lots more from Hatchie (aka Harriette Pilbeam) who is already heralded by the press as the new indie darling and got much praise by all the blogs and magazines at the end of last year. Harriette Pilbeam was already quite a prominent figure in Brisbane scene: she played in bands like  Go Violets and Babaganouj,  but was attracted to the indie/dreampop sound from the 90’s and decided to do her own thing with this specific sound.

Harriette onSure“I wrote “Sure” about people I know falling in and out of the same relationship issues as we grew out of our teens into early adulthood” she explains. “When I initially wrote it, it was about a couple that decided to give it “one more shot” over and over again because they couldn’t bare to be apart. When I think about all the lyrics now I realise that it could be interpreted in a number of different ways.”

Hatchie recently signed with Ivy League Records and will the release her debut EP “Sugar & Spice” this year and the single Sure” preceeds what already looks to be a busy 2018 worldwide, with shows at SXSW & The Great Escape already confirmed and much more news to follow soon.
