Catenary Wires – Mirrorball

Catenary Wires – Mirrorball

Mirrorball, is the new single (and video) by The Catenary Wires, indie project of Amelia Fletcher and Rob Pursey (ex Talulah Gosh, Heavenly, Pooh Sticks), who started The Catenary Wires as a duo, but ended up as a full band with the inspired contributions of musical pals Fay Hallam (Makin’ Time, keyboard), Ian Button (Death In Vegas, drums) and Andy Lewis (Paul Weller Band, bass).

Mirrorball is the tale of two lonely, single people at an 80’s disco night “filled with divorcees and middle-aged drunks“. The song houses recognisable, subtle, and sometimes overt tributes to the 80’s: there are echoes of Big Mountain‘s “Baby I Love Your Way“, but (fortunately), also traces of Tracey Thorn and The Smiths, adorably adorned by a Pale Fountains-like trumpet. All blending seamlessly into a dreamy, honest and uplifting love ballad for the more mature indie-kids amongst us (like myself), who lived through exciting times of monumental musical shifts, in which we all actually DID go out and experience the magic and the horror of the disco. Unlike our kids these days, alas.

Mirrorball might starts off a bit sceptical, but it ends up falling head over heels with the music of a decade that was both genuine as well as tacky. Amelia : “For the video, it didn’t prove so very easy to mock up an 80s disco in lockdown, in our spare room, with just two people, but this was our best attempt! The Catenary Wires write songs for “grown-up indie kids”. They don’t pretend to be 23 any more, but they do remember what it felt like“.

Mirrorball is the first single from upcoming album Birling Gap, which releases on the 16th of April. The 7” single will be available in UK and European record stores on Skep Wax Records, and in the US on Shelflife Records. Digital single will be shared on www.skepwax.bandcamp.com and other streaming platforms. To celebrate, there will be a (virtual) 80’s disco planned and everyone is welcome to join! Top indie club How Does It Feel has invited The Catenary Wires (and a lot of guest DJs) to take over for the night on March 27th, sign up here!: https://www.facebook.com/events/448872316317961/
