The downside in publishing the end of The Year List too early, is that someone might drop a fantastic album on the 2nd of December. Oh well. But here it is: Fauxllennium, a collaboration between TV Girl and the mighty George Clanton!
Fauxllennium nicely blends elements of chillwave, baggy, vaporwave and neo-psychedelia, but it has, above all, RAVE written all over it! For the younger readers: Rave was a (indie) genre in the late 1980s/early 1990s: a mix of indie, baggy, acid house and techno, which were the genres to be played at (often illegal) underground rave parties. This resulted in the rave counter-culture in which people were popping pills, wearing neon smiley shirts and smiley faces, and basically being on cloud 9, in love with everyone, forgetting about the evil money culture outside. Fauxllennium couldn’t have come at a better time… we need Rave right now like never before!
The 7 song mini-album starts off with the misleading title “Summer 2000 Baby” as it instantly takes us back to The Happy Mondays‘ “Step On“, which was released in 1990! Still: are you looking outside at the drab weather, listening to the god awful news about ghastly-right-wing-greedy-bastards and oligarchs and climate disasters? Just put on “Summer 2000 Baby” and it will all go away for a bit. Can’t put a price on that. Honestly, you can just put the album on without worries – not just because it makes them go away, but also because you can rest assured that every track is bril, so no skipping needed on this trip! My other favourites are “Fauxllennium“, “Butterflies” and the apptly named “Yesterday’s World” :
“Yesterday’s world /Seems so far away these days /Yesterday’s dreams/ Seem just so right to me these days /Can we go back in time?/ Can we go back in time? / Can we go back in time? / Can we go back in time?”
As a disappointed Gen x-er, I couldn’t have put it any better! I will playing Fauxllennium a lot, as it is a flicker of nostalgia, if not hope, in these dark days.
