Softsummer is the indie-folk/dream-pop project of LA based indie artist Brian Houck who creates immersive singer-songwriter soundtracks for losing oneself in a hazy serentity. “Reverie” is the 1st single of his forthcoming EP “Dover” due during the autumn of this year.
“Reverie” encompasses mellow, sundrenched vibes à la Wild Nothing or Real Estate, guided by a poised acoustic guitar, but is also underpinned by breezy, wistful synths giving it a bit of an alternative 80s’ pop sheen. Houck‘s timbre especially, reminds me of The The‘s Matt Johnson which adds to the track, giving it more depth, and makes it a bit more interesting than the usual dreampop act. “Reverie” was written during the initial, tense months of COVID-19 lockdowns, and is a melancholic song of hope and a longing for sunnier days in the open air.
