Valentine Dial, the musical project of Melbourne bedroom artist Thomas Bryce, releases single “5 AM” today: a stunning, reflective piece of acoustic dreampop conjuring up images of roadtrips, faraway skies and sultry weather. The song feels like watching scenes of life through the remote focus of a camera lens. It reminded me a lot of one of my favourite tunes “Into The Sun“by Hovvdy, albeit a bit more abstract/ambient.
Bryce: “ 5 AM is a song about finding inner resilience when all the voices inside you tell you that you won’t make it. Letting go of the harmful people or substances that hold you back from growing.” Included in the release is B-side “The Other Girls,” another reflective story of navigating the many unknowns involved in youthful love.
Bryce infuses indie-folk and dreampop into his music sounding effortlessly reflective, sweet, and nostalgic. Inspired by the sonic aesthetic of artists such as Sufjan Stevens and Elliott Smith, Bryce carefully blends his intimate vocal with melodic guitar and subtle soundscapes.
