The name is confusing, as the front-guy of Los Angeles, Califonia based outfit Human Barbie looks nothing like Barbie (in neither human nor artificial form), and the music doesn’t sound disposable or shallow either. Human Barbie was formed in 2018 by songwriter Christopher Leopold. According to Leopold, Human Barbie is “an analogue fantasy, born in a bedroom studio and hidden in a zen temple; an amalgamation of a lifetime of AM-radio road trips and midnight vinyl.” Human Barbie weaves threads of psychedelic pop and indie, into tightly crafted songs that are like dream-like tapestries, both colourful and obscure.
“Be Careful What You Wish For” is the 2nd single from forthcoming LP “Get A Life“, and is a subtle, understated but effective piece of lofi indiepop. It’s honest. slow-paced, but has meticulously poised progressions, and feels like a state of numbness versus an inner turmoil that is restrained and drawn back each time it suggests going somewhere. Sheer beauty.
